FOOD & WATER Is it safe to drink the water in Mexico? We do not recommend drinking from the tap but it is perfectly safe for brushing your teeth, bathing or cooking.
Should I bring my own water? No. You can buy bottled water from any grocery or convenience store or the many water plants.
Is it safe to eat in Mexico? Yes. Most of the restaurants use purified water for cooking and drinking. Ask around before eating at the taco and hot dog stands and get recommendations from people you trust. Look for clean hands, and the people that handle the food do not handle the money. Make sure the condiments are covered and do not eat hot condiments that have been sitting out. Remember most people get sick because of the spicy food and too much alcohol.
What kind of food should I expect in Rocky Point? We have everything from American food to Mid-Eastern Food and, of course, Mexican food. You can grab a pizza, Chinese food, hot dog, taco, seafood and just about everything you can imagine. Check out the Rocky Point Times Newspaper for a variety of eating establishments.
Is it safe to buy fresh fish and shrimp? Yes. We have the best and freshest selection of oysters, clams, fish and shrimp. Be sure you get what you pay for. There have been many complaints of people getting their purchase home to find they have been shortchanged on the weight.
Is it True that I should not eat seafood in the months without an “R”? Partly true. You should avoid oysters mainly from May-August. Other seafood such as fish and shrimp is perfectly safe all year long.
How much shrimp can I bring back to the U.S.? You are allowed 50 pounds per person.
When does shrimping season end? The season runs from September to April.
Can I still buy shrimp and fish after the season ends? Yes, you can still purchase shrimp although it is fresh frozen and prices are a little higher. You can also get flounder, pinto, bass, snapper, etc. e-mail us if you don’t find your answer here.
LODGING Are there motels in Rocky Point? Yes, we have lots of motels and hotels. They range in price from $25/night to $150/night and are located all over town from beachfront to in the neighborhoods.
Do the Motels take Online Reservations? Some do take online reservations and some do have companies that book the rooms for them. Please make sure the hotel you are booking with accepts online reservations and that the company you are making the reservation through is an established and legitimate business authorized to take the reservations. Too many fake internet sites have sprung up claiming they take reservations. Get a direct line for the hotel you are booking and call to confirm your reservation or get a recommendation from a friend who has made online reservations before.
Do the Motels accept Credit Cards? A lot of the motels/hotels do accept credit cards but you will need to check with the motel first.
How far in Advance Should I Make Reservations? Some people book up to a year ahead. As soon as you can make travel arrangements, make your reservation as Rocky Point fills up fast and people are no longer waiting until the last minute. For the more popular weekends, it is advised that you make your reservations well ahead of time, at least 2-3 months or more.
Are there places to camp on the beach? Yes, we still have places you can camp on the beach. You can camp at Sandy Beach for $5 a day or at some of the beaches south of Rocky Point. Pretty much all of the RV Parks allow tent camping.
Are there Condo Rentals Available? Yes. Peñasco is now home to many beautiful resorts many of which offer rentals on a nightly basis. Some of them include the Sonoran Spa, Sonoran Sea, Sonoran Sun, Princesa de Peñasco, Condos Pinacate, Las Palomas, Bella Sirena, Las Palmas, Esmeralda, Casa Blanca Golf Villas and many more. Are there Home Rentals? Yes. Many homes are available for rent in town and along the fine beaches of Rocky Point. Some of the more popular places are Las Conchas, El Mirador and Sandy Beach. Many homeowners rent their own houses while others go through agencies such as Seaside Reservations, Cyndi’s Rentals (for long term rentals), Oceano and Twin Dolphins just to name a few. MEDICAL EMERGENCIES What do I do in the event of an accident, medical emergency or death in Mexico? Rocky Point has facilities to handle most medical emergencies. We have a Red Cross, Clinics and Hospitals, some of which offer English speaking doctors and staff. For phone numbers and more information on their services please click the links.
Are there air ambulance services available to Rocky Point? Yes, we have Sun West Aviation and AirEvac that fly to Rocky Point to transport patients. Please visit our Information Page for more info. and dispatch numbers. Most clinics will use the service of their choice but you are free to contact whichever service you wish. e-mail us if you don’t find your answer here.
MONEY Do I need to exchange my money before I get there? No, all merchants accept U.S. Dollars. With the Peso changing daily, it might save you a few dollars here and there to weigh the peso against the dollar and see which way you will save money.
Do the merchants accept U.S. Dollars? Yes all of them do but don’t expect your change to be in USD.
Can I exchange Canadian Dollars and do the merchants accept it? No. You must change other currency into USD before you come into Mexico.
Will the bank cash Travelers Checks? They used to but we cannot find a bank that will at this time. Some merchants are also accepting them now.
How do I know if I should pay in pesos or dollars? You have to do the math. Most merchants go with the current exchange rate but some merchants are still at 10:1 (10 pesos to $1). If you cashed in your $1 and got 11.5 pesos for it and someone is charging you $1 for an item and only wants 10 pesos, then you are ahead 1½ pesos by paying in pesos. For most vacationers the hassle is not worth the few cents you might save but for those planning on making large purchases, it might save you more money to figure out the best way.
Is it okay to barter? Yes. Bartering is perfectly acceptable. A lot of the vendors love to bargain with you and of course you want the best deal. It never hurts to ask but some shops have their set prices and will not barter. e-mail us if you don’t find your answer here.
PETS Can I bring my pet into Mexico? Yes. Dogs and Cats are allowed. You will need to carry a copy of the rabies certificate in case you are asked. Do not bring livestock, birds or other rare animals into Mexico.
Can I bring a bird back to the U.S. from Mexico? Yes you can but you will need to exit through San Luis and the bird will be quarantined for 30 days. It is not advised.
Are there veterinarians in Peñasco? Yes, we have vets here in town that can give care for your animal in case of emergency or general preventative care. They also sell dog and cat food and pet items as well as offer bathing services and pet boarding.
What do I do if I lose my pet in Peñasco? The best way we have found to recover a lost pet is to saturate the area with flyers offering a reward. Hand them to taxi drivers, water trucks, etc. and put an ad on the local Mexican radio station. The best way to ensure your pet’s safety is to leave it at home or keep an extremely close eye on it.
Are Pets Welcome in Restaurants and Shops? As a general rule, NO! People come to Mexico and think just because they are here that it is perfectly acceptable to bring your dog into a restaurant. It is not. Some cantinas will allow dogs. You need to ask the shop or restaurant owner first before assuming your pet is welcome.
Is there an Animal Shelter in Peñasco? Sort of. Until recently, Nancy Phelan ran a very productive animal shelter. They city, for whatever reason, has closed her down and will not let her take in animals and care for them. She is still collecting and distributing pet food, pet toys and medicine and trying to continue her spay and neuter program. Help is needed to make sure these poor animals roaming the streets get proper care, food and they need to be spayed and neutered. REAL ESTATE Can I own property in Mexico? Yes, through what is called a Bank Trust. The Bank holds the Trust and it is Transferable.
What is the Federal Zone? The Federal Zone (or Restricted Zone) is an area 100 KM along the borders and 50 KM along the coastlines.
What is an Ejido? An Ejido is a parcel of land that the Mexican Government has set aside for its citizens. Ejidos are sometimes owned by a group of people. You can purchase Ejido land but make sure you go through the necessary title search and make sure everything is legal.
Why do I need a Notary Public? Notary Publics “Notario’s” have your best interest when it comes to real estate and business transactions. They have extensive knowledge of the laws and documents necessary to make a legal transaction. If you do not have your documents notarized, they are not legal. When entering into any contract in Mexico, you should seek the advice of a Notario.
What is a Hectare? A hectare is a land measurement, like the acre. A hectare measures 2.47 acres and an acre is equal to 43,560 square feet.
Can the Government Take my Land? No. You have as much chance as losing your land to the government in Mexico as you do in the U.S. You must do your homework and make sure you have clear title to your land.
Can’t You Only Own Land for 50 Years? No. You own your land through a Bank Trust (see above).
I Heard a lot of People Lost Their Land on the Baja in Mexico. Is this true? Yes, it is true BUT people who lose their land have no right to ownership. As in the case on the Baja, those people purchased land they thought was free and clear, built houses, and then found out that someone else owned the land. It was never their land to begin with this is why it is so important to make sure you have clear title and consult a Notario. Do Your Homework! SIGHTSEEING & FUN Will I see dolphins? Most likely yes - all year round and sealions too.
Where is “Rodeo Drive”? Rodeo Drive is actually Cholla Bay Road (the old one). Going north on the main blvd. you will make a left on Cholla Road and follow it our past the railroad tracks where you will come upon a bunch of little curio shops - this is Rodeo Drive also known as Shacks Fifth Avenue and the Dirt Mall.
Can I get NAUI certified in Rocky Point? Yes. Visit Sun ‘n Fun Dive Shop on your way into the Old Port.
Are there Snorkel and Dive Equipment Rentals? Yes, at Sun ‘n Fun Dive Shop you will find everything you need to snorkel and scuba.
Can I drive my ATV or vehicle on the beach? No, you may not ride your ATV, buggy or any other vehicle on the beaches within the city limits. The city is also prohibiting them on the main blvd. through town (Benito Juarez) and would like everyone to wear a helmet and no riding at night.
What is there for Children to do? There are now a variety of activities suitable for children. Visit the Cet-Mar Aquarium, take a tour at CEDO (they also offer excursions and tidepool explorations), go clamming, parasailing, Bird Island tours, Belly Dancing sunset cruises, dolphin watching, ATV and Jet-ski rentals, banana boat rides and of course playing on the beach! What are the Pinacates? The Pinacate Mountains are located north of Puerto Peñasco about 22 miles. It is a volcanic crater region and is very interesting. You can visit the Elegante and Cerro Colorado Craters or hike the Carnegie or Pinacate Mountains. The Ranger Station, as you enter the reserve, has all the information you’ll need for the area. What is there to do in Rocky Point? As well as shopping, dining out and clubbing, one can also rent ATV’s, Jeeps, SeaDoos, boogie boards, kayaks and bicycles. There is the Cet-Mar Aquarium and CEDO tours as well as exploring the tidepools, sailing, fishing both offshore and out in the ocean, crabbing and clamming, exploring the estuaries, driving around seeing the sights, laying on the beach, bargaining with vendors, scuba diving or getting NAUI certified, exploring the volcanic craters of the Pinacate region, sunset cruises, charters to Bird Island and just plain taking it easy. Is there a golf course in Rocky Point? Yes. There is a 9-hole course at Laguna del Mar (though currently closed) and The Links are open at Las Palomas on Sandy Beach. TRAVEL What documents do I need to cross the border? At this time, you do not need any personal documents to cross into Mexico if you are staying within the free zone (a predetermined area where you do not need a tourist visa). It is a good idea to carry a drivers license or other photo ID in case you are asked. You should also carry a copy of your title and registration information for your vehicle. Coming in 2009 (maybe) all U.S. Citizens, traveling by land to Mexico, will be required to have a valid U.S. Passport when reentering the United States. This will include minors traveling with their parents and on their own. As of January 2007, if traveling BY AIR into Mexico, you are required to have a valid U.S. Passport.
Can I travel throughout the State of Sonora without a Vehicle Permit? Yes, you can travel throughout Sonora without a vehicle permit. You DO NEED your FMT (tourist visa) if you are to remain in Mexico longer than 72 hours. You can get your FMT at the border in Sonoyta, Mexico. As of January 2007, you are NOT able to get your FMT in Puerto Peñasco.
Is it safe to drive to Rocky Point? Yes. We have a nice 2 lane highway all the way to Peñasco and the Green Angels patrol it everyday. During the season, which runs from October to May, there is a lot of traffic on the highway so there will most likely be other vacationers on the highway. The Wings of Angels mans a medical emergency station at the halfway point. Be extremely careful when coming or leaving on busy weekends - seems everyone is in a hurry and sometimes they pass when they can’t see.
Is Traveling to Rocky Point Safe? Yes! Despite what you may hear on the news (especially in Arizona), it is safe to travel to Rocky Point. The media often groups all of Mexico into one category when there is violence or trouble. That would be like saying “Don’t travel to the U.S. because there is violence in Washington, D.C.” Truth is, you are probably safer coming to Rocky Point than driving any street in any major city. Unfortunately the media is not held responsible for their misinformation which leaves a lot of people confused, scared and not knowing the truth. We value our own safety as well as all of those who visit this city. If you have heard a rumor or a story, please don’t hesitate to contact us to get the real truth!
Can I use Mexican gas in my automobile? Yes. Some people claim that it is bad for their automobiles but we all use it. I doubt it will do any damage for the short time you will be here. If you are still worried add a cleaner with your next U.S. tank full and as of 2006 it is A LOT cheaper than gas in the U.S.
How much gasoline can I bring into Mexico? None. Since Mexico sells gas you are not allowed to bring any in. Some people can get away with a few gallons but be prepared to be turned back or pay duty.
Is there a transportation service to Rocky Point? Yes, there are shuttle services and bus lines that make daily trips to Rocky Point and we have an airline company that comes on the weekends. You can find more information on our Information page under the travel section.
Can I rent a car to take into or in Rocky Point? Yes. There are a few national rental car companies that allow their cars into Mexico. You usually have better luck if you call a company in Tucson or Phoenix or at one of the airports in those two cities as they deal with Mexico travel more often. You usually have to carry their Mexican insurance. You can find more information on our Information page under the travel section.
Do I need Mexican Insurance? Yes. Absolutely. It’s the Law! At minimum you need liability but full coverage is recommended as most US policies do not cover travel into Mexico. Check your policy first. Your US policy is not recognized in Mexico - you must purchase Mexican insurance.
Do I need insurance on a towed trailer or vehicle? Yes, it is the law in Mexico that any towed vehicle must be insured with the towing vehicle whether it is a house trailer or a trailer carrying ATV’s.
Is it possible to get insurance in Phoenix or other cities to save time at the border? Yes, you may call ahead to many insurance companies and they will have your policy ready for you. For some of those companies please visit our Business Directory.
What do I do if I get stopped by the police? Never pay the officer who stops you. Most likely they will take your license and ask you to follow them to the police station where, if you have done wrong, you will pay a minimal fine and be sent on your way. A lot of tourists run stop signs and railroad crossings on accident but it is the law that you stop so be sure to keep your eyes open.
Is it illegal to drink and drive in Mexico? Yes. Contrary to popular belief it is illegal and you will be taken to jail if caught. If you’re in an accident and are found to be intoxicated your Mexican insurance could be voided. Our new Mayor is enforcing the no drinking and driving law.
What if I am in an accident in Mexico? Call the police. That is the very first thing you do. All accidents must be reported to the police. They will come out to the scene and make reports. You will then probably have to go to the police station until they determine who is at fault. If you are at fault and do not have Mexican Insurance then your car will be impounded and you may possibly be jailed until you can make restitution to the other party. If they are at fault then the same will happen to them. If you have insurance you need to contact your adjuster immediately and you will begin the process of making a claim.

Can I bring in my camera, video camera or telescope with me to Mexico? Yes, you are allowed to bring all of these items into Mexico as long as you are a resident of another country. Please review our Information page for items you can bring into Mexico.
Can I bring my ATV into Mexico? Yes, you may bring your ATV, buggy, etc. into Mexico just make sure you have proof of ownership in case you are asked at the border. If you do not have the proper paperwork (title, registration, etc.) you may be turned back.
What time is it in Rocky Point? Rocky Point is on the same time as Arizona. We do not change our time.
Is there a helmet law in Rocky Point? Yes, the police are issuing tickets to persons riding ATV’s not wearing helmets. Rental companies are required to furnished riders with helmets.
Is it safe for me to let my teenage daughter and friends go to Rocky Point alone? Obviously you know your child better than anyone. They must, of course, be careful as they are when they go out at home. The bar owners at the more popular dance clubs keep an eye on the girls and take action when someone is being harassed and all they have to do is complain to one of the security guards or the owners who are usually in attendance during the busy weekends. Tell them to stick together and not to ditch each other - make sure everyone is accounted for when they leave the cantina. Make sure you have the hotel number where they will be staying and try the number to make sure it goes through before they leave also write down the license plate number of the vehicle they will be driving. The legal drinking age in Mexico is 18. The U.S. Consulate is usually here during Spring Break also for any troubles that arise. Please read the travel info. above about passports.
Are there Flights into Rocky Point? Yes. West Wind Air Service has flights into Rocky Point on Friday and Sunday. The round-trip airfare was $279 and they leave from the Phoenix area.
Know the Law! Stop and Declare! We strongly advise you to stop and declare any merchandise you have above your allowed limit ($50 USD per person). This includes food, electronics, furniture, etc. DO NOT attempt to test your luck and see if you get the green light. The Mexican Aduana is happy to impound your vehicle and make your life miserable. If you do not stop and declare, and are found to have more than your limit, it is their right to impound your vehicle, take your merchandise and throw you in jail. You may get your vehicle back but it will cost you thousands of dollars. Absolutely DO NOT pay “mordida”. Do not pay any Officer or Inspector. You will need the receipt from the bank as proof you have paid your taxes. If you pay mordida (bribe) and cross into Mexico and get the red light you have no proof that you have paid anything.
You are allowed $10,000 USD into Mexico. This includes checks! We strongly advise that you do not bring any form of canceled check or junk mail checks into Mexico. The Aduana Inspectors do not know the difference between real checks and bogus or canceled checks. If you are transporting over $10,000 USD, in any form, you MUST stop and declare. If you are purchasing property it is strongly recommended that you wire the money to a local bank - do not even attempt to carry a Cashier’s check or Personal check over $10,000 USD without stopping and declaring. e-mail us if you don’t find your answer here.
