Letters to the Editor Published June 2007

Hi,
My name is Skip Peralta and I live in Washington State, but have a shack in Ajo that I am fortunate enough to get to visit for a couple of weeks in the winters. The last time I was there in February I went to Puerto Peñasco and bought a pair of prescription glasses from Optica Vision. The telephone (638) 383-4769 says it is out of service and I have tried many times. I put $200 down with another $120 on delivery, and he said he would send them to me in Washington State as I had to get back soon. He said one week to get them and, after 2 months and many emails and countless attempts to call, I am ready to see if I can expect to get any assistance from the local police and how I would go about this. If you have a phone number or any suggestions I would very much like to get my glasses. Thanks for any help or advise you may have.
Cheers,
Skip Peralta
Washington
We called and talked to Dr. Araiza and he said he had talked to Mr. Peralta. He has received his glasses that had been sent awhile ago and were lost in the mail.

Dear Editor:
I have a Pomeranian named Mickey who is nine years old. He developed problems with his feet and was constantly licking the pads on the bottom, and was in real distress at times. He gave up running for his ball, which was his favorite pastime, and spent a lot of time under my bed or desk. I was very worried about him. I took him to my veterinarian in Canada and she thought it might be allergies so we tried antihistamines. They did not work and the problem continued. A few months later I took him to my vet in Phoenix and, after a long examination, he decided he did not know what was causing the problem! Finally, I went to a veterinarian here in Puerto Peñasco who was recommended to me by a friend. She said he saved her dogs life, and I know that was true because her dog was terribly ill, and everyone thought he was dying. Anyway, Dr. Rincon at the Pet Health and Care Centre checked Mickey's feet and said, “I believe Mickey has nerve damage in his feet, the same as human's get sometimes”. He put him on a medication, plus doggy glucosamine and a doggy aspirin once a day. I am thrilled to say that, now, three weeks later, Mickey is 90% better. I know that Mickey will have to have this medication probably for the balance of his life, but anyone who loves their dog will understand the thrill I have of seeing my dog back to normal, joining everyone in the house for company, going outside happily, and playing with his ball, although we keep that part in the house on the carpet. No need to aggravate his feet outside.
I am writing this letter because I want anyone who needs help with their dog while down here to have confidence in knowing there is a great vet that they can trust. Thanks Dr. Rincon, and thanks R.P.T. for publishing this letter.

P.S. Dr. Rincon's phone number is 383-344 in case someone needs it.

We went to get cigarettes for our friends in Lukeville at the duty free store and were informed that we can only bring one carton per person. Your newspaper says we can bring two per person. Could you verify this please?

You can bring 2 cartons per person into Mexico but can only re-enter the United States with 1 carton. If you are just crossing into Mexico and reentering the U.S., then you can only have 1 carton.

Hello,
I am wanting to obtain an FM3. Do you have a contact number of whom I can work with on this from the U.S. I will be returning to Rocky Point on Friday and wanted to bring everything I need to get it started.
Thanks
Brenda McCoy
You can check our Classified Section for names of persons and businesses who can offer you their services. We have used Silvia Villa of Premium Services for almost the entire time we have lived in Mexico.

Hello,
I heard you were taking a trip maybe up and down the new Coastal Highway. I'm in Rocky Point now and was wondering if you traveled to Golfo de Oro? How far has the highway been completed? I’d like to leave today. If it hasn’t totally been completed do you think a small Isuzu Rodeo Sport packed with a ton of gear, 4x4 could handle it? Thanks much for your input.
Eric
We just returned from our 4x4 trip to El Golfo de Santa Clara and traveled along the new Coastal Highway until it ended. We are not sure where Golfo de Oro is but if you can give us a little more info., perhaps we can help you better. You can take the new highway to the first train station and cross the tracks there. A few in our party took it all the way to the end (approx. 25 miles) and then had to follow a trail that ran along the railroad tracks and then jump the railroad tracks whenever they could. They ended up about 7 miles from the 2nd train station going this way. On the other side of the tracks, the road is easy to follow so we would suggest crossing there. Sally, owner of Xochitl’s Café in Cholla Bay had her little Suzuki Samurai and make it with no problem. We don’t recommend you go alone, of course, and the spots where you will have the most trouble are on the beach and a few places going through the sandy dunes (speaking as if you are going toward El Golfo de Santa Clara).

RPTimes:
Do you know if Veronica's iron shop on the main drag (west side) going into Rocky Point has moved or has gone out of business? She makes us custom iron furniture all of the time & I saw that she has moved out of her place the last time we were there.
Thanks,
Trevor Foster
We did notice that everything had been removed. We have tried calling around and can find no information except that they are from San Luis Rio Colorado. We’ll save your email and if we hear anything different, we’ll let you know.

RPTimes:
Do you know if there are any “cyber cafes” in Rocky Point? I'm going to be spending 10 days down there in April, and really need internet access during that time for work related stuff. Also, do you know what cell phone services will work down there?
Thanks!
Linda
We now have many cyber cafes as well as businesses with wireless connections – you can hardly go a block without finding one! If you are staying at a resort or condominium development, check with them as well because most are set up with internet service.
The carrier that seems to work the most consistently here in Rocky Point is Cingular. We have both Cingular and Alltel and with Cingular we can send and receive phone calls, text messages, email, etc. Alltel was working pretty good but as of a few months ago we can no longer receive incoming calls. We can still use our phone to call out but receive no calls and cannot check our voicemail. We also had Verizon some time ago and it stopped working as well.

RPTimes:
Recently I read an article you did on the Old Port Copper Works. I visited this summer and I am planning on a return trip just to purchase one of his beautiful tubs. I tired to call the number you had (011-52-638-105-3160) as well as 044-638-105-3160. Do you know if they have an email or any other number to contact? I would love to make sure they have what I want before I make the trip down there. Any help would be much appreciated.

Olegario has a new phone number which is (011-521-638) 105-9329. If that had been the right cellular number, you would have had to add a 1 after the 52 when dialing to get through.

Dear RPTimes,
Can you please verify if this is true or not. I am sending pictures of a shark supposedly caught off the shore of Puerto Peñasco. One of the pictures looks like the fish market, but I’m not sure.
Thank you,
S. Foster
Las Olas
We have noticed that the email has been circulating. We called the Port Captain, PROFEPA (fishing office) and CEDO and none one of them has heard about any sharks being caught recently. Paty, our office manager, recognized one of the men in the photo and he is the owner of Perico Marinero. She called him and he said that the photos are 2 to 3 years old and the shark was caught out by Bird Island. Craig of Del Mar Charters said that he has spotted a shark recently out there as well but nothing close to the shores of Puerto Peñasco. We expect them out by Bird Island since that’s where all of the yummy sea lions are. Even a few of the banana boat operators said it has been at least 10 years since they have spotted a shark close to shore. We should worry more about jellyfish and stingrays.
